The Australia Malaysia Business Council (South Australian Chapter)

The Australia Malaysia Business Council (AMBC) was established in 1988 and operates as a member based business organisation with independent Australian State Chapters. It aims to foster, support and promote business, investment and cultural opportunities between Australia and Malaysia. With the 2016 census results by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicating Malaysians as a growing migrant population in Australia, the role of AMBC becomes even more significant.

The South Australian chapter, namely The Australia Malaysia Business Council (SA) Inc. was established in 1994. It provides localised strategic support to improve South Australian and Malaysian market access by ensuring our members have the necessary information and networks to increase their business opportunities.

Merdeka Awards

Since the annual Merdeka Gala Dinner is a significant event to commemorate and celebrate the Malaysian Independence Day, it also presents Merdeka Awards to outstanding Malaysian students completing university studies in Adelaide.

The Merdeka Awards has been awarded to outstanding final year Malaysian students since 1999, with good media coverage both in Malaysia and South Australia. The Merdeka Awards presents scholarships and prizes to final year Malaysian students studying at University of Adelaide, Flinders University and University of South Australia. Sir Eric Neal, AC CVO (former Governor of South Australia) has been Patron of the Merdeka Awards since its inception and the top award was renamed the Sir Eric Neal Award as of 2012.

Where possible, the AMBC (SA) also places award winners for an agreed period of internship with significant South Australian businesses. This is meant to encourage South Australian businesses to develop a relationship with new Malaysian graduates who will not only have a lifetime of professional work exposure to South Australian business practices and ethics, but this link may also be a turning point for South Australian businesses to develop a stronger Malaysian network over time.
